The PhotoBook Intensive

THE PHOTOBOOK INTENSIVE is a collaborative workshop concentrated on the creation of a final artist book or a dummy, taking participants through different stages of the inception of a book. The workshop, led by Anshika Varma, is focussed on locating individual voices and formats of authorship of the book, bringing together intention, creative expression and the practicalities of the life imagined from the book.
Over a process of 10 days, the instructors work with participants to investigate and flesh out the world that their books address. Broken into different modules : Intention, Tools and Language and Crafting your Artist Book we work both in groups and through one-on-one sessions to truly engage and experiment with the possibilities of the book structure for each project.
Although a big part of the content looks at photography, we encourage projects that are multidisciplinary in nature and focus on the book as a the medium of its expression. Images can appear in the form of archives, objects, personal and found images and our conversations and exercises in finding their relationship to the authors, to those whom it might choose to represent and with other material/content will lead to engagements with editing, narrative structures, design and binding techniques.

Application DETAILS :
The workshop is open to practitioners who are nearing completion or have a complete body of work intended for publication. Binding tools are provided to each participant along with material to create a5 sized notebooks while learning binding techniques.
The application form requests for a low resolution pdf of the work, a statement on the project and the authors profile.
Each participant is expected to carry their own prints for the workshop, these can be basic prints to be used as placeholders or in the creation of a dummy.
